# 01997 :  Condemnation of adultery

John 8:1-11:

1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Can anybody explain why the Lord did not condemn the woman caught in the act of adultery?

In marked contrast, we see how the Lord addressed the church Thyatira in Rev 2:18-29 where the Lord does not hesitate to condemn the woman Jezebel and her adultery.

18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;

19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.

23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

28 And I will give him the morning star.

29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

What is the difference between the adulterous woman in John 8, and the adulterous woman in Rev 2 - Thyatira?

(PS) I plan to answer my own question after we have had a chance to discuss it. Thanks for your input.

Well, the entities I can think here:- (not worrying too much of background)

1. LORD 2. Woman 3. Distance 4. Confession/Prayer

If we have un-confessed sins in our life, the Lord is less pleased with us and our prayers will be hindered.  In fact, as un-confessed sin continues, it will breed rebellion in your life; you will find yourself growing more and more distant from God.

The woman in John 8 was caught red handed, "in the very act". But they brought the woman, and not the man. The law of Moses (under which Israel was then) clearly says that both the adulterer (man mentioned first), and the adulteress should be put to death (Lev 20:10; Deut 22:22). So the Lord responded by writing down some thing on the ground. He also asked them a question when they insisted Him, "he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her". The Lord was not saying that those who never ever committed sin let them cast a stone. No! The sin He referred to was specific. It involved the wicked scheme of protecting the man who was involved in the adultery while unjustly wanting to stone the woman alone. The Lord did not condemn her because He came not to condemn, but to save (John 3:17). If He were to condemn, He would have to condemn all those who came to accuse her. When Jeremiah prophesied about the New Covenant (Jer 31), he mentions that house of Israel had broken the Old Covenant, and prophesies about the New Covenant under which God would forgive their sins. The Lord Jesus Christ came for this very purpose - to seek and save the lost sheep of Israel. Note that the Lord says in the end to that woman - AND SIN NO MORE!

Coming to Jezebel, the Scripture says, Revelation 2:21  And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. This woman Jezebel was given a chance to repent, but she did not. Further, she was deliberately doing it. What she did was called as "doctrine of Balaam" (compare Rev 2:14). Numbers 25:1-2  And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. In this passage, both the sins, of committing adultery, and eating things sacrificed to idols are there. This was done because of Balaam's counsel.  Numbers 31:15-16  And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD. Balaam did this because he could not curse the children of Israel. If he entices them into sin, then the Lord would send judgment upon them and many will perish - that was his idea.

The woman caught in adultery. It was a case of a personal sin of an individual. The woman was not deffending her case before the LORD. One can say that she found grace before Him. She was forgiven of her sin with a compassionate admonition, "Go in peace and do not sin anymore". I believe that that woman went from the presence of the Lord with great gratitude to the LORD for the received forgivness. I do believe that she kept the command of the Lord"Sin no more". This is an example for all. Be compassinate with a brother who has fallen. Help him to rise up. Give him(her) the assurance of God´s mercy and love.

The case in Thiatira was doctrinal defection from the truth. It has a devastating effect not only on individuals but on the whole society of believers. So it is sternly condemned.

the answer lies in the passages itself

John8-11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more-

He gave her a chance to repent

Rev 2-21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

Jezebel was given a chance and she repented not.

The Lord is merciful. Confess , repent and sin no more. Grace be with you all!
