Living by faith –
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith.
People wander from faith not only by doing what is considered as sin in a moral sense. Godless chatter and professing opposing ideas result in wandering from faith. I am deeply convinced that CS is opposed to God’s Sovereignty. CS makes God into a mechanical automated, brute power program working like an insensitive algorithm. They despise God’s love and insult His grace.
Writer to the Hebrews says:
God spoke in the past through prophets; and in these last days He has spoken through His Son. Heb 1:1
Those who hear God speaking by His Son shall not harden their hearts by sin’s deceitfulness. Heb 3:7-15.
The hearers must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what they hear, so that they do not drift away. Heb 2:1
The message God spoke by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment Heb 2:2
God has now spoken of a great salvation and those who ignore it shall not expect to escape. Heb 2:3
This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. Heb 2:3-4
Heb 12:25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?
The Jews (Hebrews) of the First Century AD refused to believe in the work of Redemption completed by the Lamb of God. They refused to believe that “Jesus is the Christ”. The main thrust of the message of the Apostles to the Jewish audience was that:
“Jesus is the Christ”
(See John 20:31; Acts 5:42, 9:22; 1 John 2:22, 5:1.)
This is how the Bible describes the Work of Redemption accomplished by God through His Son:
1. When fullness of time came God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law. Gala 4:4
2. God’s Son came to seek and to save those that was lost Luke 19:10
3. The Son of God was named Jesus because he will save his people from their sins. Matt 1:21
4. God presented His son as a sacrifice of atonement. Romans 3:25
5. Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Eph 5:2
6. Jesus Christ had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins. Heb 10:12
7. By one sacrifice he has made perfect for ever those who are being made holy. Heb 10:14
8. Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin. Heb 10:17-18
Writer to the Hebrews made it very clear that:
“NO SACRIFICE FOR SINS IS LEFT”. Heb 10:26.
God prepared a way of salvation from sins that satisfies His requirement, His holiness, His justice, His righteousness, and His own very Nature. What God did through His Son is sufficient, effective, complete and perfect. Salvation through Jesus Christ is not a “do-it-yourself” program for the sinners. What Jesus did was not simply for making people “savable” but for saving them. Jews of the First century depended on their wrong interpretation of the Scriptures and refused to accept Jesus the Messiah and salvation through faith in Him.
Hebrews 10:26 - 27 says thus:
If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
- What is the deliberate sinning referred here?
- What is this knowledge of truth?
It is the knowledge of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ and the deliberate sinning is the rejection of the Son of God.
OT Law and its regulations were the shadow of the good things that came through Jesus Christ. It is impossible for the blood of OT sacrifices to take away sins. Those sacrifices are only an annual reminder of sins. Because of all these:
Christ came to do the WILL of His Father;
vto set aside the First Covenant and
vto establish the Second or NEW COVENANT.
By that WILL, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10
Those who refuse to believe in the efficacy of the sacrifice of atonement by the Son of God by continuing to remain under OT; its Temple worship, Sacrifices, Priesthood, Festivals etc
- are trampling the Son of God under their foot;
- they are treating the blood of covenant that sanctifies them as an unholy thing;
- they are also insulting the spirit of grace. Heb 10:29-31
Those who reject the Son of God and His sacrifice deserve severe punishment because they are sitting in judgment of God about His Redemptive Work. The Lord will judge those faulty interpreters of scriptures; who reject His Son and the work of Salvation He has accomplished because of those faulty interpretations of Scriptures; which the Israelites did.
The judgment referred in Heb 10:31 is for those who reject and refuse to believe the efficacy of the sacrifice for sin offered by the Lamb of God; they do it by misinterpreting the OT; those who refuse to believe the uniqueness of the work of the Son of God will fall into the hands of the living God, and it would be a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
