# 00059 :  Sports career
is it right according to the bible to participate in sports and choose sports as a career.

Why not?

"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare composed poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.'"
---Martin Luther King, Jr.

Whether you are called to be a streetsweeper, athlete, engineer, doctor, lawyer, do it all to the best of your ability, and do it as unto God.

Dear jane,

An advise on career selection is not that simple. You may not like to go to a ONE MINUTE TRIAL LAWYER OR A TWO MINUTES BRAIN SURGEON for your problems in those fields. When you go to such a person, they have to know a lot more about you. Then only they can do their job well.

Having said that, what do we know about you? Nothing!!! Not even your real name!!! What kind of sports are you planning to be in? We don't know!!! There are a number of thing one should know before giving an advise that affects the rest of another's life. Therefore, are you willing to tell us more about you? This goes into personal informations and that is not a good thing, especially in this matter.

Now you know, why many are silent.

Shalom malekim!!!

Dear Koshy Sir,
Thanks for the reply.I am sorry if my topic was not suitable here. I only wanted to know if sports could be encouraged among believers to build up career. If Yes/NO pls support with bible ref.
i am quite new to this site.
If you feel this topic is not worth discussing and if nobody is interested, that is fine.
Praise be Lord
Jane

Dear jane,

Thank you for your reply. I never said that your question is not suitable for this forum. That is not mine to decide. I maake decision only on my replies.

Let me provide some examples to illustrate the difficulty in answering with an "Yes/No" answer to your inquiry, as you require:

If a person ask me about selecting a career in sales, I cannot give an "Yes/No" answer. The reason is, 'pimps' as well as 'harlots' are in sales. They sell sex to others claiming that that is the oldest profession. We know from the scriptures that it is agriculture, including shepherding, is the oldest profession (Genesis 2-5).

If one ask about to be in practicing law, there are certain law career that are not suitable for Christians. "Trial law" is one of them. Ulloor Velayudhan Nair's law career is an example.

If one ask to be in the medical field, again an "Yes/No" answer is not possible. There are medical professionals that practice abortion as a surgical or medical practice. They may call it 'family planning.'

Certain social service career will also fall into this category of 'family planning.'

Similarly, there are certain sports that are not good for Christians to practice. Since I know very little about you, I have to refrain from giving advise on career selection. This I made clear in my previous posting.

I hope that this will clarify my position in giving career advice to others from a distance.

Shalom malekim!!!

I like to share my thoughts to your sincere question.

Generally speaking, there are many things to watch for in every profession. As the question raised is general is nature, my answer will also be in general terms. It may help further if specific nature of the job is mentioned.

What are the intentions behind seeking a sports career? Is it money, prestige, power and acceptance? Being in the public eye could affect you for good or for bad.

Before you consider, ask yourself:
1. Does it bring glory to God?
2. Will I get more opportunities to fellowship, attend Church and witness?
3. Will I be able to grow in the Lord?

If your answer is yes to the above, then seek the Lord's will for you. Does God think that you are apt for this job? God knows our strength & weaknesses and He is the best judge of all. With an open mind, a willingness to know His will and obey His will whatsoever, He will show you His plan for your life.

Finally, if you continue to have divine peace in your heart, you must step in faith with prayer and He will guide you.

God Bless!

i simply fail to understand as to why brother Koshy makes such a big issue and raises a hue and cry abt not knowing the real names of people posting on this forum !!
He may have revealed his name and other details but many may not be comfortable in doing so over the internet, and then again even if you do get a full name and other things what assurence do you have that they have givin out their real names ?
Issues need not be related or pinpointed to a person to be answered.
Secondly how have you come to the conclusion that Jane is asking the question so that he/she himself/herself needs to take spoting as a career?? The question may be discussed in such a way as to find an answer from the scripture, without getting into the intentions and personal details of the person.

My personal inference from the original question asked was that it was sincere and general in nature. Moreover, I'd rather give a helping answer in one reply rather than go in any further detail unless the poster volunteered on her own accord initially. However this approach, though beneficial it may sound, may not used by others.

God Bless!

Dear All
Thanks for all the responses.Iam very much clear that if sports in an individuals life is effecting his/ her spiritual life then surely need to drop it. Thanks to Mr. Varghese for giving the points to judge ourself.
Now i would like to say what made me add this topic here.

I was really good at sports during my school days, during this time i accepted Jesus Christ as my saviour. I continued in sports(athletics)and did well in it and was selected for Nationals, but then our pastor said, sports was not good for us, I obeyed him (was not matured enough to judge myself). i never again participated in any sports events. Now i completed my studies and working. when i went through this site i just thought of adding the topic(sports) which was my dream when i was kid.I believe it was not Gods wish for me to be in sports.
Gods name be glorified.

Hey jane, i want you to read the book, "Bend it like bechem". Theres a movie out there, but if you read the book its better than the film. I want you to do that because- you and the book have alot in common. And also I want you to realize you wont make it in the real world with a sports carrier. THe scripture says, "wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of god". So realld meditate on that decsion; the book will help you brain strom some ideas on the christian life.
